Orphanage in Chhebetar – Nepal

The orphanage is home to 25 children and a host family. It was commissioned by SCH Children’s Home in Nepal and realized in collaboration with a local engineer and entrepreneur.

The project is based on local building tradition and available building materials. Climatic conditions are controlled by massive stone walls to the south and west, protecting the building from heat. Cooling winds from the Himalayas in the north are utilized by shutters and sliding elements. The entire project was realized in 6 months when Hans Olav Hesseberg and Sixten Rahlff (3RW) lived in the town of Chhebetar. The project was awarded the AR+D award (overall winner 1999) and Ralph Erskine award (1997)
