Fløen Student Housing

Bringing together landscape, topography and collective living.

Today, we have reached a high and refreshing architectural language for student housing with urban form, colour, active landscape which shows significant evolution on the idea of collective living in the city.
Today however we are still missing part of the program that would sustain those spatial intentions into the mixed-use nature of what a city should be able to deliver.

We are still missing what make space a durable place.

Retail in this project is critical to offer a point of attraction as well as diversifying the project. It also overcome the financial challenge for SiB to acquire attractive plot in the city while having to respect financial obligation.
This is key a part to deliver a next generation of student accommodation that are part of an urban fabric and move away from the dormitory enclave that is still today the model in place.

All the following proposal, given this outstanding plot in the heart of Bergen most buzzing neighbourhood, offer this possible next step. Three options of landscaped podium.

Engaging a linear site and the topography:
1-Band
The band strategy divides the site in two clear area and uses the slope to move from level to another as public space with seats, terrace and plantation.
2-Two elements
With the Two Elements strategy we blur the limit of the upper part and the access slop on one side while establishing a clear height drop to integrate other program such as retail. In that scenario the slope becomes the social ground to move from level to another as public space with seats, terrace and plantation. It creates a clear building line near the new Art school that helps creating a overall hierarchy.
3-Cascade with with levels
The Cascade mediate with more finesse the challenge of the topography while creating three distinct environment. A lower hardscape terrace, a green mid-terrace and an upper garden hiding the retail unit underneath. It creates a clear building line near the new Art school that helps creating a overall hierarchy.
