It was announced earlier in the year that 3RW, Dronninga Landskap, COWI and Light Bureau won the wide-ranging assignment to develop Bergen’s Møllendal River and Beach Park; we are now in the process of starting the work, with a focus on participation and project management. We are also engaged in practical design decisions, in close collaboration with Dronninga Landskap. The group’s task is to prepare and define an overall plan for the entire project area, in addition to a masterplan-like concept study, as well as a series of diverse detailed solutions for the river park.
Ideally situated in the south-western area of the city centre, the banks of Store Lungegårdsvann are developing rapidly. In the face of such growth, an array of planning measures is being implemented, in order to improve Møllendal’s milieu for people and nature. Four key projects, referred to as “De fire store”, have been identified: “Clean Harbor Bergen”, “Bystrand and the new Lungegårdspark”, “Møllendal River and the Beach Park”, and, finally, “Pilot Grønneviken”. In this context, 3RW’s in-depth experience of nature restoration following our decade-long involvement with Forsvarsbygg and landscape healing initiatives are particularly relevant, as the works at Møllendal are oriented towards green development and climate-friendly solutions. Our client, Bergen municipality, formalizes this when commenting the project’s four goals:
1) Contribute to cleaner water and cleaner soil, through environmental measures that improve the handling of polluted masses, and help preventing the release of environmental toxins into rivers and seas.
2) Restore the outlet of the Møllendal River, and bring about better conditions for biological diversity above and below water.
3) Facilitate park areas (and river areas) that are robust and adaptable with regard to climate.
4) Develop the edge and beach zone into public seaside park areas, with attractive and healthy recreational offers, as well as inclusive activity zones for everyone, both on land and in the river.

The illustration of Møllendal River and Beach Park by artist Åshild Kanstad Johnsen is featured in the “De fire store” exhibition, which is located along the Store Lungegårdsvann at the moment. It was commissioned by Haltenbanken, Bergen municipality’s Bymiljøetaten (the city’s Urban Environment Agency).
