The summer has been a great chance for 3RW to join forces in preparing a large retrospective book. A lot of work to go but we are happy to share the progress.
The question ‘’what is the city?’’ in the Norwegian culture today resists being settled and seems instead taking several leads. In a country where only 5% of the land is urbanized, and 80% of what seems intact is cultivated, it is often retrograded behind the question ’’what is the nature?’’ and cannot stop being intertwined to the faith of the city. The place of nature is an interrogation that other European countries seems to have clarified for long, or so they think, and dedicated instead a century of urban planning to address the first question. It is liberating to realize that the question stays open there too.
The work of 3RW since its first commission for the Biennale in 2000 constantly embraces this diversity and doubts to practicing architecture today in a fast growing and changing society.
Rather than a monographic tryptic of 3RW first decades –cultural and academic stepping-stones in vibrant Bergen scene and across Europe, series of individual villas and major landscape work to collaborating on planning and urban project shaping the future of Norway – this first publication is an attempt to register the diverse voices addressing the challenge of contemporary Norwegian cultural and urban transformation.
This book brings together interview, essay and research, together with 3RW’s multi-disciplinary and collaborative practice of design.
