A recent report in the Stavanger-based newspaper Aftenblad details the expansion and improvement of the training infrastructure in Vatne. Following two years of intensive and collaborative work between 3RW, Forsvarbygg and other local actors, the 200-meter track is now considered to be one of the most high-tech shooting ranges in the country. Efforts have focused on noise reduction, as well as brand-new “evening shooting” light systems and sensors, in order to insure the good cohabitation of trainees and nearby residents.
The new upgrades include huge ramparts that have been set up to collect the bullets and reduce the noise from the shots; an increase of the firing capacity follows from such noise reduction measures. We estimate that the number of annual shots in Vatne is set to double from next year. However, this rise will occur simultaneously with important schedule limitations and ongoing conversations with neighbors.
Our knowledge of Norwegian landscape healing has been instrumental to the efficient removal of 5,500 tonnes of hazardous waste from the site, most of which had accumulated on the ground after long periods of bullet fire.
