Aga Sideri

Utvikling og transformasjon av sidergård i Hardanger

BACKROUND

Aga cidery has distinguished itself as one of the foremost cider producers in Norway, with several national prizes. Over the past years, 3RW has been engaged as an architect for the overall development of the farm, and have delivered first phase plans for transformation of the barn, the cidery and the quay.

The farm Is both a family home, a workplace, as well as a visitor farm for an annual stream of cider loving tourists; this requires sensitive architectural solutions that balance the interface between private and “public”: through reorganization and reprogramming, the farm has great potential to be opened up for use by both the local population, tourism and the family who live on the farm.

THE BARN
The overall composition and spatial sequence of the barn must allow for more or less pragmatic and permanent solutions that facilitates for flexible use.

The project is grounded on a strategy where transformation of the barn opens up for a more versatile use of the building body, including the introduction of vertical communication in the building, which is absent today. The project has aimed to further develop and “cultivate” the building’s foremost architectural qualities, which are the silo chambers that are currently unused, as well as the barn attic that is used as a warehouse.

In the first phase of the project, we have proposed a solution where the barns three silos, which are no longer operational, are actively used as both stairwell, cider tasting room and room for a lifting platform.

The today’s completely closed facade towards south has been transformed into a woven wall of light and wood. In the project we have strived to create a facade which ensures that the very special atmosphere in older agricultural buildings is preserved, through light being filtered into the building body, embracing the subtle and honest construction of wood, stone, and concrete.
