Socio-cultural site analysis of Sandviken

This project follows from the initiative of Bergen municipality and developer OBOS for the creation of a new, ambitious area plan for the neighborhood of Sandviken, with a marked focus on the Neumann waterfront site. Substantial residential development, industry buildings, kindergarten, squares, bathing shores and other outdoor areas are imagined as part of this plan. 3RW was tasked by OBOS to carry out a simplified socio-cultural site analysis, with the aim of synchronising the overall plan with local identities; with the various histories and needs of inhabitants of this part of Sandviken.

Our socio-cultural site analysis identifies and represents features of the site – complex interests and conflicts, possible socio-cultural consequences of measures, and the likes – with the aim to provide a better basis for future planning and programming. The analysis highlights new and existing understandings, interests, differences, users wishes and requirements. It is carried out through a methodological approach informed by interviews, brainstorming sessions, surveys and a critical summary of all existing information. 3RW architects and planners have designed the socio-cultural report with a particular focus on knowledge which ‘builds a bridge’ between planning phases, engineering activities and the further development and programming of the area. For this purpose, the study concentrates on heterogeneous identity factors, and works on their desirable encounter. We use textual and graphic depictions to hint at the area’s potential contribution to greater Sandviken, as well as its potential for becoming a truly attractive residential neighborhood.
