3RW’s design for four houses in Mjølkeråen – a few kilometres north of Bergen’s city centre – has been shared. A project which is part of the series of densification studies undertaken by the office in recent years, it replaces one single residential building with many. The new architecture presents much improved tectonics qualities, a more fluid relation to the site, and an increased accessibility (all units have access to a lift).
In the houses’ interior, tight lines and rustic concrete surfaces meet cosy, warm wooden materials: the contrast makes for a rich experience of domestic space. Another significant design principle relates to the role that nature and the four buildings’ surroundings play in the interior expression of the architecture, and so, in the experience of being home. A great emphasis has been given to openings’ placements, framing the beautiful view and putting it regularly in focus. The Lokketona houses are placed on the plot with care, in a way that follows the existing profile of the terrain. This has the consequence of maximizing on-site views and aesthetics.
The renderings are made by Lisbon-based NRML.STUDIO for 3RW.
Other residential projects which aim at densifying an existing area include, among other, the three houses at Nystuveien in Bergen. More information about Lokketona can be found here.
