An article published yesterday in Bergen’s BT newspaper describes the creation and installation process of “Melkeveien”, an art piece which is directly integrated in the flooring of the Haukeland Bybanen (light-rail train) station. The station is one of the office’s ongoing infrastructural projects: it includes the design of the station pavilion – over ground – and of the station itself – underground, a first for the coastal city. The work by textile artist Inger Johanne Rasmussen is a composition which oscillates between abstract and figurative representation, and translates patchwork aesthetics into large polished concrete fragments. We think that, through its visual language and material expression, “Melkeveien” corresponds to a successful integration of art and architecture in a public space. As highlighted in the article, the colors and lines of this “concrete carpet” can function well as landmarks for meeting points, and thus will facilitate daily usage at the Haukeland station. We particularly appreciate the humor and symbolism of creating a “skyline” in a deep underground space. We also appreciate the craftsmanship (here manifested by skilled worker Chaiya Suwanjun) displayed in the art work’s installation, as well as in the general construction of the station. Looking forward to the (planned) 2022 opening!
