Logen Theater Refurbishment and Extension

A total renovation and a new lantern-like volume extends Bergen’s 130 years-old institution for Regional ‘west coast’ Theater.

Det Vestnorske teater is an important cultural institution for nynorsk, or ‘new Norwegian’, a literary form of the Norwegian language constructed in the 19th century as a new national idiom; a centrally located entertainment venue, the Logen theater was built in 1883 and became a significant part of Bergen’s popular culture scene.

The introduction of a new theater in the old cultural institution constitutes a great opportunity to strengthen the past-meets-present nature of the site. Architectural challenges are articulated around these histories, balancing them with contemporary ambitions and energies.

The new addition establishes a dialogue with the classical forms which are present in the major (and iconic) cultural instutions of Bergen; these include KODE 1 Permanenten, The National Scene, or Rasmus Meyers
